All underground petroleum storage systems are regulated under the Protection of the Environment Operations (Underground Petroleum Storage Systems) Regulation 2019 by Council due to the potential to leak and contaminate surrounding land and groundwater, creating a risk to human health and the environment.

Notification of a pollution incident to the relevant authority is required under Part 5.7 of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997. The person responsible must notify the relevant authority immediately after becoming aware of the incident by contacting Environmental Health Officers on 02 4306 7900 or completing the leak notification form.
